With Jules in Melbourne

Jules at NGVWhat a sweet way to start travelling. Dropping into Melbourne for the weekend before the madness of Asia was probably the best thing I could’ve done. Jules you’ve done well mate, a great little set up you’ve got going for yourself here. Melbournes got a great vibe going for it, probably helped by the ease in getting around. Jump on the tram, jump off the tram. Auckland get out of your cars and do something about that!! So yes the sights and sounds: Friday night we hit the town kicking out at Laundry bar (house beats). Saturday meant sunshine, late breakfasts, cruising the inner city suburbs and St Kilda beach come evening. Stella Artois tastes nice with all meals. Some stonking drum and bass at Revolver in Prahran was a pretty interesting happening. D&B in Auckland is so much more ‘set up’. In fashion the ‘distressed’ look is pretty much everywhere – rip, shred, misprint, tack on. Nice description Jules.

I rose much the faster on Sunday and took myself down to the National Victorian Gallery. I cant remember the last time I qed for a gallery. This one went round the corner and down the road. Wow. Showing was ‘The Impressionists’ a collection from Paris that kicked the socks off anything Id seen before from that movement. Monet’s, Manets, Gauguins, Cezannes and my favourite, ‘Starry night’, by Van Gogh. Jules caught up and saw a show by Photographer Man Ray, an artist leaning towards the surreal.

The wheels are in motion, Im leaving tomorrow for Bangkok.

Sounds like an awesome cultural experience to have on the eve of your SE Asia adventure. I hope you can have more of those. I remember an exhibition of Egytian art in Vienna many years ago. Meanwhile sirens remind me of where I am. Two days to Exhibition Night and all is well… still, Melbourne sounds really cool and I envy you too much… I’m following your trip… closely.
waiting for pix and I need to send you two new images

Sounds like fun. I’m going to Melbourne for the first time in October on an InDesign conference. Any suggestions of places to go gratefully received.
Enjoy Bangkok and remember to bargain hard out!

Going to melbourne first was the best thing you could have done before hitting Sout east Asia. Interesting reading Roger, I look forward to the next part of the trip in Thailand.

hey Nova, Prahran seemed to be where it was at with a lot of night life and cool looking clubs. A great junction for catching trams etc is Swanston+flinders down the bottom of their town. Definately a lot of movement in that area. Meet some freaks and ask them where they are going!
