Ko Tao times
Ko Tao has been pretty sweet since Ive been here. Beautiful weather, beautiful paradise. Apparantly its direct translation is ‘Turtle Island’ Can anyone tell me if the turtles were still here in the mid nineties before this place developed?
My last post might have sounded a bit flat but I can tell you the last day or two (what day is it?) has gone off. For a start I jumped back on the Horse. Delia, youd have be proud of me chugging around the island on a Red Rocket. Last time I tried to ride a motorbike I came off, but neccessity got me back on. I would never ride a bike in Bangkok. Its organised chaos there – the road rules are more like a guide. I remember been in a tuk tuk on my first day merging into head-on traffic!
I caught up with the Aussies (ben, pete, jo) Canadians (bridget, megan) and some others last night, drunk some beer and went into the main drag. Had a ripper doozey night. Some firey cuisine (so hungry I ate two dishes) Thai beer and cocktails in buckets. Bars front onto the beach so we moved along and found one that played good house beats and boogied on till 2. A really cool night to let the hair down (A figure of speech people).
I woke this morning feeling nearly none of the effects, but lying in my own sweat. Ive only got a fan room and the electricity stops running from about 6am-4pm. So I lay on the cafe deck by the beach and talked with some Danes for an hour or 2. My dive course started in the afternoon with no messing around. All academic today and some more tomorrow. Seems really professonal. Tomorrow we’re in the pool.
ps Ill try harder to write place names and descriptions of places etc more correctly. This’ll happen more as I graduate from tourist to traveller

Hey Roger!
Well your trip so far sounds as overwhelming as we both expected!! But you’ve got through the worst part, so hopefully the rest of your trip will just be huge amounts of fun. Starting with your diving! FUN! You’re talking to two seasoned professionals in that area – well not really, but we’ve both been diving and it kicks ass! Have a wicked time.. we’re both tuning in to your stories.

Hey figure of speech….. Cooool you lucky sod. Angelo still wants to know where the pics of the canadian girlies are but I don’t know if he will be able to see them by the time I have finished with him….
Watch it with the cocktails in the buckets when we experience those we couldn’t sleep till 10am the next day, but we had three of them so that might explain it – do you know whats in them cause I can give you a cool recipe if you want. You poor thing we do feel very sorry for you and the hard life you are having. Only one fan (that rarely works) having to lie on the deck on a tropical island, forceing yourself to party till the wee hours of the morning, socialising with canadian woman, almost effectiveless hangovers and then you’ve got to sit through lectures – sounds like hell mate. If you want to swop places you can come and live with Ang and I’ll do all that tuff stuff for you – after all what are friends for!!!
Take care and enjoy – peace to you
Lisa (and Angelo!)
PS Please take our photo off the site – it looks awful and will probably scare the vistors away!! Angelo says to leave it there but also wants you to put the pictures of the canadian women on.

Hey Rog,
Yeah there was turtles there apparently up until the mid nineties when the tourist boom happened, then they all buggered off elsewhere to get some peace and quiet while they are mating (wouldnt we all?)
hahaha yes I still “let my hair down” even though the reality of that isnt really possible anymore
Don’t worry mate, it’s just that massive intelligence makin some more room and pushing those pesky hairs outta the way.
man it sounds awesome, surprised you haven’t bumped into half a million kiwis yet, everywhere I’ve gone there has always been a million of us buggers.
p.s. dont forget the simple pleasure that can be had from just snorkling, even though i dive it’s still just awesome grabbing a mask and some fins and getting amongst those sharks and water snakes (it was amazing just how fast i was able to run through the water while being chased by a coral snake in oz hahaha)

Hey Roger, in Bangkok now but heading down to Ko Tao this evening so had a wee look at your pics and text to get an idea of what lies ahead. Looks and sounds amazing and (after the many crazy cities we’ve visited in the last two weeks) like a small but perfect piece of paradise.
Laos sounds so cool, really envious that we couldn’t visit there and north Vietnam, reckon you have so many treats ahead of you…Ho Chi Minh gave us a small peak at yet another beautiful country and people with a very sad history.
keep on rollin down the mekong river, quite an experience isn’t it! take care,
